The American Institute of Architects: The Visionary Body Regulating the Profession

Headquartered in Washington DC, the American Institute of Architects is a United States’ professional organization for architects. It was founded in 1857 by 13 architects in New York City. Over the years, the American Institute of Architects. Currently, it boasts of over 260 chapters and 90 000 members.

The American Center for Architecture, the building housing the offices, also houses two institutions, first, the National Architectural Accrediting Board, together with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture and secondly, the American Institute of Architecture Students

The American Institute of Architects has five membership categories:

  • Allied Members

The most prestigious honor within the American Institute of Architects is elevation as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA). Student members can join the American Institute of Architecture Students or opt for student membership categories in their state chapter.

The American Institute of Architect has a staff of over 200 full-time employees and is governed by a Board of Directors.

Robert Ivy is its chief executive officer and the Executive Vice President, a position he has held since 2011. He graduated with a Master of Architecture from Tulane University and is a member of the International Circle of Architecture Critics. Before joining the American Institute of Architecture, Ivy was the Editor in Chief of the Architectural Record.

Under his direction, the magazine earned various publishing honors, including the American Society of Magazine Editors’ National Magazine Award for General Excellence. In 2009, he won a G.D Crain Award.

In 2010, the national architecture fraternity, Alpha Rho Chi, named Ivy a Master Architect, a designation bestowed on only seven others in 100 years with him as the only one in the 21st century. He has also served as the U.S. Commissioner at the Venice Architecture Biennale.
