Headquartered in Washington DC, the American Institute of Architects is a United States’ professional organization for architects. It was founded in 1857 by 13 architects in New York City. Over the years, the American Institute of Architects. Currently, it boasts of over 260 chapters and 90 000 members.

Robert Ivy is its chief executive officer and the Executive Vice President, a position he has held since 2011. Before joining the American Institute of Architecture, Ivy was the Editor in Chief of the Architectural Record.

Under his direction, the magazine earned various publishing honors, including the American Society of Magazine Editors’ National Magazine Award for General Excellence. In 2009, he won a G.D Crain Award.

In 2010, the national architecture fraternity, Alpha Rho Chi, named Ivy a Master Architect, a designation bestowed on only seven others in 100 years with him as the only one in the 21st century. He has also served as the U.S. Commissioner at the Venice Architecture Biennale.
